Safety Tips
Tips to ensure safety when working
with optical fiber.
-
Use a resilient,
dark colored surface to provide contrast for the fiber and to reduce the
possibility of fiber bounce back.
-
Carefully
dispose of all cleaved fibers. Do not directly dispose of loose fibers into a
wastebasket. Place cleaved fibers on a piece of tape or dispose in a debris
container.
-
Immediately
remove any fibers that penetrate the skin with a pair of tweezers. Delays can
increase the chance of infection and may make it difficult to remove.
-
Do not eat or
drink where connectors are being terminated. Ingested glass fibers can cause
internal damage.
-
Protect your
vision:
-
Do not look
into the end of a live terminated connector.
-
Wear safety
glasses with side shields to protect eyes from wayward pieces of fiber.
-
Do not touch
your eyes or face when handling bare fiber. After working with bare fiber or
solvents, immediately wash your hands.
-
Use caution when
using solvents and adhesives:
-
Observe all
recommended safety precautions when working with adhesives and solvents.
-
Work in an
area with sufficient ventilation.
-
Do not smoke,
even if there are no flammable solvents. This will help prevent the
likelihood of hand-to-mouth transfers of glass particles.
-
Alcohol soaked
wipes must only be used once to clean the fiber and then disposed of properly.
This will prevent the risk of injury and contamination of the fiber or the
ferrule.
