3mm Tight Buffered Fiber Instructions (18 Steps)

Step 1

Slide tapered end of 3mm flame retardant boot onto 3mm cable approx. 6".  Starting with the small side of the crimp ring, slide the crimp ring onto the 3mm Cable.

Step 2

Place 3mm jacketed cable over Template.  Mark 1.505 dimension, as per template.  Strip.

Step 3

Trim Kevlar whiskers approx. 1/2".

Step 4

Place .9mm buffered tube over template.  mark .75" dimension, as per template.  Strip buffer tube off in front of 3mm cable with No Nik stripper.

Step 5

Now the 3mm jacketed cable will appear as shown in diagram.   Set aside carefully.

Step 6

Apply about 1 drop of Norland 81 optical adhesive into the back (clear) end of the ferrule holder.  Allow 6 seconds for the capillary action to draw the adhesive into the ferrule holder.

Step 7

Thread the fiber through the back end of the ferrule holder until it bottoms out.  Approximately 1/4" of fiber will be showing in front of the connector.

Step 8

Place connector in curing fixture with "J" slot facing up.  Place UV light over connector, insuring that the blue UV light covers the fiber,  connector, and entire ferrule holder.  Place light into curing fixture.  Cure for 1 minute.  (PVP curing fixture recommended.)

Step 9

Slide the crimp ring over Kevlar whiskers until flush with back of connector.  Using the Sargent 2165 CT crimp tool, crimp back portion of larger diameter crimp ring w/.178 die.  Next, crimp small portion of crimp ring w/.128 die.

Step 10

Slide flame retardant boot over crimp ring.

Step 11

Cleave fiber on two sides. Pull straight up.  Carefully dispose of cleaved fiber.

Step 12

Place PVP rubber mat over PVP lapping plate and line with 15, 5, 1, &.3 micron lapping film.

 

Step 13

Add 3 drops of water to each lapping film.  Place connector into ST* polishing puck.

 

Note for Steps 14 thru 17: 

Be sure to blow off connector and puck after each lapping sequence to prevent contamination scratching of core. 

 

Step 14

Push down on the spring 1/2 way and do 10 figure 8's, using light even pressure, with 15 micron lapping film.

Step 15

Push down on the spring 1/2 way and do 14 figure 8's, using light even pressure, with 5 micron lapping film.

Step 16

Push down on the spring with 100% pressure and do 10-15 figure 8's using 1 micron lapping film.

Push down on the spring with 100% pressure and do 10-15 figure 8's using .3 micron lapping film.

Step 18

Then insert ferrule straight up into 100x Inspection Microscope and inspect fiber core.  Click on links below for acceptable and unacceptable polishing outcomes.
