Step 1

Slide tapered end of .9mm SC boot onto .9mm cable approx. 6".

[Diagram]

Step 2

Slide silver locking piece onto buffered fiber and then slide the spring onto buffered fiber.

[Diagram]

Step 3

Measure and mark .750" from the end of the .9mm buffered fiber.  Next, strip the buffered fiber from the mark with No Nik stripper.

Step 4

This step is very important.  Clean stripped fiber with isopropyl alcohol soaked lint free cloth or a dry lint free cloth.  To clean fold cloth in half over fiber and gently squeeze on the fiber and pull it through the cloth.  This will clean the fiber of debris.

Step 5 - Gluing the Fiber (Anaerobic, Epoxy, and UV)

Anaerobic Instructions

  1. Take Loctite RC680 adhesive with flat end needle and insert into the back end of the connector ferrule holder leaving Teflon guide tube in place. When it bottoms out, gently squeeze adhesive until a green dot forms in front of the ferrule. Then slowly withdraw adhesive (while maintaining pressure to allow some adhesive to coat the inside of the ferrule and ferrule shank.)

  2. Brush the stripped part of the fiber approx. 5/8" (.625") of the fiber from in front of the buffer (leaving 1/8" (.125") from the front end of the stripped part of the fiber uncoated) and 1/4" of the buffer with Loctite 7649 primer. Wait 15 seconds to allow primer to dry.

  3. Thread the fiber through the back end of the ferrule shank through the Teflon guide tube until it bottoms out.  [Diagram]

  4. Proceed to Step 6.

Epoxy Instructions

  1. Mix Epo Tek 353ND epoxy (recommended).

  2. After mixing epoxy, fill a syringe with epoxy. Place needle tip over syringe and insert into back end of ferrule holder leaving Teflon guide tube in place. When needle tip bottoms out, inject epoxy until a yellow dot forms in front of the ferrule. Slowly withdraw syringe (while continuing to inject epoxy to allow some epoxy to coat the inside of the ferrule holder).

  3. Thread the fiber through the back end of the ferrule shank through the Teflon guide tube until it bottoms out.  [Diagram]

  4. Place in fiber optic curing oven at 120° C or more for 3 minutes to accelerate and reduce chemical bond time. Remove from oven and allow to cool. (PVP curing oven recommended.)

  5. Proceed to Step 6.

UV Instructions

  1. Apply about one drop of Norland 81 UV Optical Adhesive into the back end of ferrule shank through the Teflon guide tube. Allow 6 seconds for the capillary action to draw the adhesive in the shank.

  2. Thread the fiber through the back end of the ferrule shank through the Teflon guide tube until it bottoms out.  [Diagram]

  3. Place ferrule shank with threaded fiber in UV curing fixture. Place blue UV light over fiber and entire glass ferrule. Cure for 1 minute.  [Diagram]

  4. Proceed to Step 6.

Step 6

After curing, carefully rotate spring and silver locking piece up the back end of the ferrule holder until spring seats on holder and locking piece is stopped by the spring.  Slide .9mm boot up and slide into place to hold pieces together.

Step 7

Using cleaving tool, lightly score fiber at the point where fiber comes out of ferrule tip.  Then pull up on the fiber until it separates from the ferrule.

(Note: Do not snap off fiber, pull directly off)  (Caution: Cleaved glass fibers can be very sharp.)

Step 8

Align large flat on silver locking piece so that it is parallel with beveled top of white inner housing.  Insert silver locking piece into white inner housing and rotate so that small flat of silver locking piece can be seen in the white inner housing.

[Diagram]

Step 9

Place PVP rubber mat over PVP lapping plate and line with 15, 5, 1, and .3 micron lapping film.

Step 10

Add 3 drops of water to each lapping film.  Place connector into polishing puck.

Note for Steps 11 thru 14:

Be sure to blow off connector and puck after each lapping sequence to prevent contamination scratching of core.

Step  11

Do 10 figure 8's using light even pressure, with 15 micron lapping film.

[Diagram]

Step 12

Do 14 figure 8's using 5 micron lapping film.

[Diagram]

Step 13

Do 15 figure 8's using 1 micron lapping film.

[Diagram]

Step 14

Do 15 figure 8's using .3 micron lapping film.

[Diagram]

Step 15

Then insert ferrule straight up into 100x Inspection Microscope and inspect fiber core.  It should appear like the picture.

Step 16

Final assembly:  Place SC shroud (cover) with small end over white inner housing as shown in the Diagram.  Make sure that the beveled top side of the white inner housing is lined up with the top of the SC shroud (cover).  Push in together until pieces lock.
